Learn more about Pfizer’s research study for an investigational COVID-19 and flu combination vaccine.
Who can take part in the study?
This study is enrolling people who:
- Are at least 50 years old
- Are generally healthy or have stable chronic conditions
- Have not received a COVID-19 or flu vaccine in the last six months
There are other study requirements that the study team will discuss with you.
How long will participants be in this research study?
About six months
How many study visits are required?
At least three visits
Your time in the study
Participants will be randomly assigned (like rolling dice) to one of four vaccine groups, and each participant will receive two shots (injections) at their first study visit. Depending on your assigned group, you may receive the investigational combination vaccine, the COVID-19 and flu vaccine given separately, or a single dose of the COVID-19 or flu vaccine alone. Some participants may receive a placebo vaccine for their second shot. The placebo vaccine and study vaccines look alike, but the placebo vaccine does not contain any active ingredients.

Study-related costs are covered
The study vaccine(s) and study-related procedures will be provided at no cost. You will also be compensated for completing study-related activities.
Participation matters
It is important to have vaccines that can prevent disease in anyone, regardless of their background.
Where and how you live, work and play can affect your health, your risk for infections, and your response to a vaccine. Some biological and environmental factors, as well as if you have one or more chronic conditions (also known as co-morbidities) can also play a role in how your body’s immune system may react or defend itself.
When clinical trial participation reflects the diversity of our society and local communities, the more we learn about potential vaccines, including how they work for different people. Everyone needs to be represented.
Your safety is the top priority
Safety is always the top priority of any research study. Before you join the study, you will be given all of the details about participation, including potential benefits and risks. Your health will be carefully monitored throughout the study by the study team.
Volunteering is your choice
Choosing to volunteer for a clinical trial is very personal, and many factors may weigh in your decision-making. To decide if this research study is a good fit, it’s important to understand the process and what is required. If you would like to participate, you will provide your consent (permission) before joining the study. You are also free to stop being in the study at any time, for any reason.
An important contribution
Both COVID-19 and flu continue to be major public health concerns around the world. Staying up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines and getting an annual flu vaccine is one of the best ways to help protect yourself and others from serious illness. Because infections tend to peak in the winter months, vaccination programs for COVID-19 and flu are likely to occur at the same time each year. A combination vaccine will make it easier and more convenient to get protection against both infections with just one dose.
About the study
This study will help us understand if combining Pfizer and BioNTech’s latest COVID-19 vaccine and a licensed flu vaccine into a single shot is safe and can help the body produce antibodies to defend against both COVID-19 and flu.
Your participation in this study could reduce your risk of serious respiratory infections from COVID-19 or flu. It will also help advance research that could simplify annual vaccination programs globally. Thank you for taking the time to learn more.
Tomorrow’s breakthroughs start today with you.
